In the next twelve months my family and I are producing a thirty documentary titled “Raising Faith: Stories About Dyslexia.” We are raising our Faith, who is fourteen and dyslexic. This documentary will give us all an opportunity to visually explore through storytelling, the experiences of young dyslexic teens. And yes, my daughter is involved in the project, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Her strong desire to understand her experiences has led her to wonder about other stories out there. And we are following her wondering to explore the terrain as a family.
And so we are at the beginning stages. Right now we are looking for funding. I have been granted a sabbatical leave for Fall 2012 as time away from daily teaching responsibilities to explore this larger visual project, and now I am on to securing visual equipment, a list of young people to interview, and creating a production schedule to stay on task. So many amazing opportunities have presented themselves right here in our own backyard, so we will chase them down and see where it takes us!
This is one of my favorite photos of Faith at seven years old, sharing a book with her brothers.
